1 Hour Golf Practice Plan for Improvement

Author: Nick Bayley

If you have an hour to put towards improving your golf game here's what I suggest you do to get the most out of this time.

When you arrive at the practice area the very first thing you should do is a few stretches to warm up and you should do this for anything up to 5 minutes or until you're warm.

Once you're loosened up the next thing you should do is to start off hitting a couple of wedge shots and then slowly go through each club in your bag, hitting a few shots with each one until you reach your driver. This should take about 20 minutes. When hitting these shots you should treat each one as though it's a real shot on the golf course. In other words, choose a precise target for each shot and then go through your normal pre-shot routine.

Once you've finished the 20 minutes of hitting full shots you should now practice pitching for 15 minutes and you should do this by hitting shots to all different distances.

What I mean be hitting shots different distances is that you should aim to hit one shot 30 yards, the next one 60 yards, one 75 yards, the next 40 yards etc, etc. And remember to treat each shot, as you would on the course i.e. pick a target and do your pre-shot routine.

Now practice your chipping and bunker play for the next 10 minutes and once again pick a target and go through your pre-shot routine for each shot. It's important that you treat each shot as a real one and not some practice shot that doesn't matter.

When practicing you should get yourself into the mindset that you have on the golf course. That way when you get to the course you'll be better prepared.

So now you've got 10 minutes left to work on your putting. And I suggest you practice putts outside of 10 feet, concentrating on your distance control and then end the practice session with some short putts (e.g. 2-3 footers). You should do this so you leave your practice session on a successful note. Here's a summary of your 1 hour practice session

PurePoint Golf Swing Technique – Fairway Woods

by: David Nevogt

If you had to rate golf shots on degree of difficulty, personally, I would think fairway bunkers is a top five. There’s no question about it. I’m going to share with you a golf swing technique to help you with this shot.

One of the main reasons some of you struggle with fairway bunkers is when you have a long fairway shot, a Par 5, you’ve hit the fairway bunker in 1 shot and now you want to reach the green in 2, so, you pull out your trusty fairway wood.

There’s a problem with that. The sole on the bottom of a fairway wood, a metal wood, is a lot wider than that of an iron; let’s say the 8 iron. The sole on the 8 iron is about, maybe a fifth or a fourth as wide as a 3 wood. This is what happens if you try to hit a fairway wood from a fairway bunker shot.

What you do is, as you start to swing down, the sole of the golf club catches the ground and makes the wood skid. A lot of times you’ll take a little too much sand and hit it 10 feet, or you’ll top it.

Fairway woods, metal woods, were not designed to be hit out of fairway bunkers. The reason is, if you take a normal golf swing and if you catch a little sand you won’t go far, or you’ll top it. That’s what your golf swing is designed to do is to run level with the ground.

Let me share with you a great golf swing technique that will help you in the future when you're in the fairway bunker.

Using an 8 iron, if you play this golf ball in the middle of your stance and put a little weight on your left leg and put the handle of the golf club over towards your left side and swing your arms up and down, the ball will go near 125 yards.

The next time you're in the fairway bunker, if you're looking for 125 yards, try this golf swing technique and use a lofted club, a 7, 8, 6 iron. Put the ball in the middle of your stance, put a little weight to your left leg, swing your arms up and down, and feel the chop down on it for a 125-yard golf shot out of the bunker.

Try that tip.

Five Most Common Putting Mistakes

by: Jack Moorehouse

No one's shocked anymore when Tiger Woods drills a 20-foot putt to win a championship. He's one of the best clutch putters in the game. But did you know that when he practices putting Tiger spends more time working on short putts than long putts. That's right. One media sources estimates he spends about 65 percent of the time he spends practicing putting working on short putts.

Most putts are from 5 to 15 feet. These short putts probably make up about 25-30 percent of your total score. You don't need a golf lesson to figure out that if you sink more of these short putts, you'd lower your golf handicap by at least a couple of strokes. Unfortunately, weekend golfers tend to commit too many mistakes when facing short putts. Here are some common mistakes golfers make when putting and some drills on how to eliminate them.

Confidence is the Key

Many golfers flinch when they putt. Or, they rush the putt so much their stroke becomes choppy and uneven. You can become a great putter if your putting stroke is smooth and free flowing. Creating good rhythm in your putting stroke is the best way of eliminating flinching and rushing. No matter what style of putting you use, if you flinch or rush you'll probably miss lot of putts. Unfortunately, most golfers concentrate more on sinking putts than working on developing a smooth stroke.

Next time you're on the practice green, make some smooth pendulum strokes with your eyes closed. As you make your stroke, count out a simple cadence "one-two." "one-two." Once you feel a good flow, have a friend place a ball at his discretion in the path of your putter head. No knowing when the ball is coming helps eliminate the flinching or rushing that can cause you to miss those short putts.

No Putting Ritual

Another common mistake in putting is a lack of putting ritual. If watch Tiger Woods, Fred Funk, or Sergio Garcia putt, you'll notice that they all have a putting ritual. Their rituals are all different. One player walks all around the putt before stepping up to hit it. Another takes his practice strokes behind the ball. But the one thing that's not different is that they use the same ritual every time they make a putt, regardless of the length or difficulty. Develop your own putting ritual. Base it on sound putting techniques and what makes you feel comfortable. And use it every time you have a putt. You'll find that a ritual not only relaxes you and helps build confidence in your putting.

Worry about Outcomes

Weekend players worry too much about the outcome of a short putt. What if I miss the putt? This places a lot of pressure on the golfer. Since the pressure of outcomes is tied directly to the hole, try eliminating it when you practice to relieve the pressure. Next time you're on the practice green, work on drills that improve your putting accuracy without using the hole. For example, place a scorecard over the hole and try to roll the ball over the card, so that the ball ends about two feet past the hole. These drills will improve your accuracy without the added pressure of sinking the putt.

Choking the Putter

A common mistake I see in my golf instruction sessions on putting is players gripping their putters too tightly. Some players grip their putters so tight, their hands almost turn white. A soft and constant grip pressure is vital to maintaining a smooth, free-flowing stroke and creating better "feel" when putting. For players who think they may be choking the putter, try holding an uncooked egg between your right index finger (or left index finger, if your left-handed) and the shaft of your putter. Now drop a few balls and stroke some putts. If your grip is too tight, you'll soon know.

Too Handsy

Another common mistake I see in golf instruction sessions on putting is players using too much of their hands in their putting stroke. Being too handsy eliminates the true feel of a smooth, free-swinging pendulum and cause jerky inconsistent putts. One remedy is to use a belly putter. Simply anchor the putter to a comfortable point on your midsection and swing away. Add a "one-two" count to the stroke to improve rhythm. This approach reduces the amount of movement in the smaller muscles in your hand and keeps the blade on plane.

Eliminating these common mistakes from your putting will not only build rhythm in your putting stroke, they'll also help increase your confidence in your putting. That's big. Ask any professional golfer what the key to great putting is and he or she will probably tell you it's confidence. Great putters are shocked when they miss a short putt. That's how confident they are. To improve your golf handicap, you need to work on things that build confidence and increase accuracy your short putting.

Planning A Charity Golf Tournament

Looking for tips on planning a charity golf tournament? There are many factors to consider, so I'll stick to the four main ones for this article. The success of your charity golf event revolves around maximizing player turnout, increasing pledge sizes, obtaining sponsored prizes, and planning tips.

Player Turnout
Your success depends on how many players your golf event draws and how actively you have your players solicit sponsors for their own rounds.

To maximize turnout, you need to get major publicity for your event. That means putting out multiple press releases, getting local media coverage from newspapers and television stations, and placing ads in the sports section of the local paper.

For the best results, put your press releases out through PR Web. Appoint a spokesperson to handle all media contacts and follow-up. For more tips, read my article on fundraising publicity.

Charity Pledges
The key is getting each player to collect a certain amount of pledges. I recommend a minimum of $100 per player in pledges. I've also played in tournaments where that number was $250 per player.

Obviously, you want to motivate the participants to raise as much money as possible. Some groups offer incentives for the top pledge getters. Others seek corporate sponsorships for that firm's players.

Pledge amounts determine the success of your charity golf event, so get input from experienced golfers and golf pros in your area.

Top Golfer Prizes
Generally speaking, you'll draw more golfers if you have great prizes for longest drive, closest to the hole, hole in one, lowest team score, lowest actual score, and best adjusted score (handicap).

You solicit local merchants to sponsor those prizes. Work with an insurance-related prize company for things like the hole-in-one contest. That way you can offer a bigger prize for a much lower outlay.

Aim to get 100 golfers (25 foursomes) and your small group could easily raise $10,000 or more. Larger turnouts will net even more with some charity golf tournaments drawing 500 golfers competing for big prizes.

Plan Ahead
Obviously, bigger pledges, more golfers, corporate sponsorships combined with massive publicity will work wonders for the bottom line of your charity golf tournament. With the right combination of these factors and good advance planning, you can certainly raise $75,000 or more for a charitable cause.

Contact local courses for group rates. Be sure to mention that you are planning a charity event and ask for discounts on cart and greens fees. Once you decide on your preferred location, reserve the date and tee times well in advance.

Charity Golf Event - Final Tips
Plan ahead to maximize the success of your charity golf event. For best results, pick a weekday when courses and large blocks of tee times will be easier to reserve. You'll often get the best rates by going to the course in person and talking to the pro or pro shop manager.

Corporate sponsors are another good way to go. Get some celebrities to golf with corporate bigwigs and you can easily raise $100k-$150k. Of course, convincing celebrities to donate their time takes some doing, but it's well worth it.

If it's your first golf tournament, be open to suggestions from other golfers. Consider working with a fundraising consultant who specializes in organizing charity golf tournaments. They work for a percentage of the gross, but you usually end up raising more funds due to their experience and sponsor contacts.

How to buy golf clubs at a discount

Oh to be a fanatic! Us golf fanatics are a compulsive obsessive bunch. What we will do to improve our swing or drive by one micron! We lay into all sorts of equipment, game improvement irons etc. etc. If we are going to spend this kind of money, how can we improve on the bargains we find? I am not going to fill this article with my theories on club selection and ball placement, I will leave that for braver authors. However where I feel comfortable is showing you the hows and whys of finding high quality golf brands at discount prices and how to go about purchasing them. Lets establish how and where you can find nicely discounted golf products, and also grasp a basic insiders guide to this market.

Like any other market for innovative products new products sell at a premium as older models are off loaded through various channels. Therefore you could hope for discounts on new items from 10% to probably a maximum of 30% and all the way up to 60% on older year models. However it is even possible to find discounts on eBay on the newest clubs, especially if they are very lightly used. Think about it, trying on and testing golf clubs is difficult at best. Therefore many golfers discard clubs after a first light use age. There is a nice fluid market for both new and slightly used golf clubs on eBay.

With a large volume of most golf clubs being traded everyday, this is the ideal near efficient market. One can study the dynamics of this micro-market and determine some useful buying rules. With a little more information than the rest of the marketplace, one can almost certainly make some intelligent buying opportunities. This article focuses on how to identify these gaps and often purchase golf clubs for 20-60% below retail.

This article should be read together with my longer piece and a web site, which produces the information required to identify buying nuggets. Find the links and URLs to these two sites at the bottom of this article. The niche site focuses specifically and only on data for the golf clubs and balls market. Every few minutes this site goes out and find information on the top brand names and most sought after models. So keep checking back.

Most information on eBay focuses on the selling element, i.e. how to sell your clubs. I have tended to specialize on the buying end and trying to identify market opportunities and price in-efficiencies to really capture excellent deals. To do this we need to understand the dynamics of the eBay market place. Like any other market it is supply demand driven, and like a large flee-market if a buyer has knowledge of how many items are for sale at what prices and how many other buyers are in the market, then that buyer can capture the upper hand. Lets focus a little more on supply.

The eBay supply dynamic is a little different in that supply of an item must be seen at a point in time. In other words, because auctions end at different times, one needs to grasp the number of auctions ending in close proximity for the same item. This gives you a feel for the supply of items or in our case cameras. What makes this interesting is that today there could be a large amount of auctions ending for a particular model, but next week there could be very few. This is one element driving the price.

The demand side is slightly more complex and hidden from the average eBay buyer. This is where that the web site I refer to at below has some useful data. Demand in eBay terms is measured (by sellers) as a number of factors - how many people view my auction, how many people ask questions, how many people place me on their watch page, and how many people actually bid. Obviously as we progress down this list the data become more reliable as an indication of demand. Page views are not easy to obtain, although some sellers place a publicly viewable counter on their auction pages. Questions and watchers are available to sellers, and the special web site mentioned below will expose this information. Number of bids is available for all to see.

Now if we happened to produce a graph as the auction progresses of the changes in the number of questions, watchers and bids one can easily see how the demand is changing as time progresses. Typically if questions are high and watchers are high, but bids are low, this may indicate some confusion (for example a spelling mistake in a model number) and a possible buy opportunity. If watchers are very high and climbing, but bids are low, this can point to a last minute bidding war, and a stay out indicator.

Armed with this information and also a quick summary of other similar auctions ending soon, plus a quick feel for the skill set of the seller and the current highest bidder, one can see a picture very different from the average eBay buyer. Soon the trained eye will observe some nice buying opportunities. For the compulsive obsessive golfer such as you author this will soon bring in a number of golf club opportunities that are quite a bit cheaper than retail. Who know I may even buy and sell clubs every few months till I reach that mystical place I so yearn for. For example it is quite possible to find gems at 20-40% of retail prices. Sometimes a lightly used golf clubs will offer some unique bargains and discounts, especially if you are comfortable with a brand and model.

Try Developing Your Own Golf Style

Some golf beginners think that all they have to do is copy Ernie Els, Tiger Woods or whoever their favorite golfer might be and bam, immediate golf success!

I am sorry to say, it is just not that easy. If it were then everybody would be a lot better. This, as we see every time out on the course is not so much the case.

In reality, no two people ever really swing the same way. Since each of us has a unique body build, some more unique than others, we need to develop our own individual set of muscles. A golf swing method used by one golfer who has a different build and has developed his or her set of golf muscles, is probably not of much value to you. Golf is an individual sport. So, find a method of playing that produces results for you, and then go with it. You will enjoy your time out on the links much more.

While it is often a waste of time to try and copy someone else, coaching by a pro can help you find your swing by getting suggestions and tips on how to improve. Just make sure you hire someone who will work with what feels comfortable for you and your natural swing.

If you hire a pro, make sure he is a superior player. You also want someone that is not going to just stand there and watch you swing. You want a pro that will actually show you how to get out of the sand and some less obvious shots you may come across in a round of golf. Make sure you are getting your money's worth!

When you're ready to play golf, and you're faced with a shot, just make your decision on how you're going to do things and stick with it. If you have a bad day of golf, don't be inclined to change what you are doing. If you start changing things every time you have a bad game you will never get any better. But don't be so hardheaded that you never try anything new either. We are looking for a middle ground. If after a few rounds something just isn't working for you, then you need to change it. Just that. Keep the good and toss out the bad. Something about a baby and bathwater comes to mind.

Certain techniques are fundamental to the game and you should try to follow them. But don't get too bogged down in these. It is almost impossible to make a good shot, when the whole time you are thinking of seven or eight things you need to be doing. When you are playing just play and when you are practicing then you can think about things like your grip, where your feet are, where the ball is, to keep your eye on the ball, to follow through, keep your head straight, etc. Hopefully the things practiced will just become natural for you when you get out on the course. This is the goal anyway.

Take your time and develop your own golf swing, one that works for you. When you're playing at the top of your game, give those trying to imitate you the advice above!

Making Awkward Shots in Golf

Author: James Murray

For most golfers, they come way too often in a golf round. Shots that leave golfers wondering how on earth they are going to stay balanced enough to hit the ball. Shots that are not as simple as the instruction books or videos make them appear. Let’s look at some ways to handle some of these golf shots.

If golfers have to make an awkward shot, first can the golfer swing without losing their balance and moving their head. Secondly, and then think of the line their club travels along.

Before assuming a stance, they will have to note where the club head will travel for the greatest distance along a straight line. Remember that the ball is in contact with the club head for several inches. They should take a few practice swings and then the golfer can see what relation their feet have with regard to their line and then determine their stance.

When they are about to hit the ball, a golfer should not sway from one leg to another. When they are about to swing, they should check to see if there is the slightest difficulty in keeping their balance. If so, keep should shifting their position slightly until they feel comfortable and are sure there will not be any stiffness in their swing. They want to feel as free as possible in their muscles and in their mind so they will not be disturbed during the swing. If they wiggle and move their weight from one leg to another as they address the ball, they are likely not going to see the ball clearly. They should keep their feet still.

No matter what kind of shot they are attempting, to make sure they control their effort to the point where they actually see the ball from the start until they hit it. They should not shift their gaze, not for an instant. Then they will not have any trouble hitting the ball.

Their swing will not be stiff, or back too far or too short. The ball will not be hit too soon. And, golfers should never look up for one second or shift their gaze until their club head reaches the ball. If they have a hard shot to make, they should put their whole mind on just watching the ball. If golfers practice these things and they will quickly gain confidence.

Now let’s talk weather, which can make any shot awkward! When the wind is blowing hard, they should bring their feet closer together. Golfers might think that they just need to hit the ball harder when driving into the wind. But the key is to be more careful at this point to hit perfectly true.

The more difficult the shot, the greater freedom they need for the play of the muscles to bring it off. Here is a tip. The shorter the shot the nearer their feet should be brought together. The key is not to hit the ball as hard as they can. If they hit the ball hard when they first meet it with the club head, it will bounce away quicker. This reduces their distance.

Uncomfortable shots plague every golfer from time to time. Learn the basics of handling them, and they will be swinging with more confidence and lowering their score significantly.

Golf and Swing Easy

Author: James Murray

When most golfers get a golf club in their hand especially a driver, they want to knock the hell right out of the golf ball. It is just human nature and feels really good to send that little golf ball to the moon if possible. In reality, hitting the golf ball hard does not make for a sound golf game.

Golfers like to do it if they need a little stress relief, but most of the time that swing causes more stress! Golfers who play a good game of golf, however, have their emotions in control and erase the “homerun” mentality.

One of the roots of Hugh golfing mistakes is the tendency to swing really hard after a blunder. A violent swing shows major power, but power is not what wins the golf game. Golf is all about accuracy and control.

Golfers have to swing easily and freely at the ball. A small trick is bring their feet together and that will reduce their ability to swing hard. Golfers that brace themselves for a hard swing use too much effort. Golfers who relax and swing easily have more success.

They have to keep their center of gravity the same. Doing this by keeping both of their feet solid on the ground in approximately the same position as when they start. They have to keep their head still and their center of gravity will not change.

Golfers who exert a sudden effort made with one of their legs or both will cause their head to move. Then they cannot see the ball clearly and they change the position of the pivotal center with relation to the golf ball. When golfers keep both their feet planted on the ground so their weight is supported on the flat of their feet, they connect with the golf ball and have the success.

When a golfer hits the ball properly everything is very smooth and takes little effort, and they realize the great result.

Now, do not brace yourself for the effort of hitting the ball. Do not be stiff. The slightest tendency to stiffen your muscles will destroy your balance. You want to make your club head go along a straight line while in contact with the ball.

A golfer should try to see how low they can send the ball, and hit it on the center of the club face. This will help to correct slicing. A ball that goes too high is at the mercy of the wind and can kick off to the right or left on rough ground.

When a golfer hits the ball, remember, the power used has to be within their control. Accuracy is what matters not power if their ball lands in the trees. Perfect control at every instant during a golfers swing. So there should not be a violent effort keep their head still and make sure their club head is going straight when they meet the ball.

A golfer's longest drives are not usually going to come when they are trying for distance but if they are just trying to put the ball down their line that they are aiming at, the distance will be there naturally.

Golfers who swing at a fairly decent speed throughout so they do not stiffen up. Do not swing back too slowly then. Basically do not swing so hard that you are conscious of the effort.

How much energy should golfers apply to the golf ball? If that golfer can control their power then that is what counts.

In Golf, Keep your Eye on the Ball at All Costs

Author: James Murray

Golfers hear this mantra in every sport, keep your eye on the ball! It is a perfect chant for the golf player at every turn. If you cannot see the ball clearly, your chances of hitting it are slim to none!

When you look at the ball, you want to keep your eyes on one spot. Do not look at your club to see if it is squared to the ball. Do not let your eye follow the club as you draw it away. Just focus on the ball, nothing else.

Also, when you look at the ball, try to get a bird’s eye view of it. Your eyes are about a foot above the pivotal center so raising your shoulders is not going to help you see the ball better. Do not gaze at the ball along the line of the shaft of your club. Look down on the ball rather than get your angles along the shaft. This will give you much better results and you would not have a tendency to look up too soon.

Now, there is a natural tendency in everyone to look away when you start to draw the club back. Ignore that tendency and just keep looking down on top of the ball.

When you are looking down you will notice that (if you are leaning over properly) the only way you can keep the club head in the line of flight is to keep your hands moving along parallel with that line. Sweep your hands along with the club head while the ball and head are in contact.

Mastering the skill of seeing the ball clearly until you hit it is true of every kind of shot. Whether the ball is in long grass, on an up or down slope, no matter what is around you, the main thing is to see the ball clearly to hit it accurately.

Very few golfers stand still when looking at the ball and concentrate their attention on seeing the ball clearly. A lot of the times people will give a glance in the direction they want the ball to go, then they look back at the ball. Many golfers would be shocked to find out that they do not stand still and keep their eye on the ball. The second your gaze shifts from the ball during any part of the swing, problems occur.

Really, a lack of concentration is responsible for most golfing mistakes. You can hit the ball well when you can clearly see the ball at every point in your swing from start to finish.

If you want to wipe out one of the worst golf faults, determine that from the top of your swing until you hit the ball you will keep your eye clearly on the ball. You will find your golf game improving so significantly, your friends may start asking you for lessons!

Putting, The Magic Bullet In Your Golf Game

When you are on, you are on. The world is your oyster and everything works. But, when you are off… well, it seems even a preschooler has more of a chance to get the ball in the hole than you do.

You would swear you have the same stance, the same putter, the same “feel” as the times you made the shot easily. What has happened?

Is putting just merely a game of luck or skill?

Not a chance. It may seem that there is no real key to putting successfully. And granted, putting is not an exact science.

But if you are having a poor golf game due to putting problems, it all can be summed up in one simple word, and that word is tension.

The more you relax your muscles in golf and especially during your putting, the more accurate your shots will be.

You make the game hard for yourself when you stiffen and tense up your muscles. The basis of good putting, as with all other shots, is absolute relaxation of the muscles. Fluid movement allows for perfect freedom and play. If you are trying to brace yourself to keep your balance, you are courting disaster.

When you are putting well, your movement is free and your confidence high. The second you miss an easy putt, you become anxious and brace yourself to try more carefully. The more you brace yourself, the worse the tension in your body becomes. Consequently, your putting suffers.
You can change putters, change your stance, and mimic every professional golfer you have ever watched. But it all comes down to loosening up. Make your muscles go flabby and limp, loose and free. Pretend your muscles are jelly.

Tension kills good shots. When you furrow your brow and set your muscles in a rigid fashion, you lose the freedom necessary in successful putting. Now you may make several shots in a row, but the time will come that no matter what you try, nothing seems to work. That is the time to gelatin-ize your body. Relax your whole body as if you are about to fall to the ground. (But stay standing!)

The extra bonus here is that as you use this method of relaxation and putt more successfully, your confidence will increase and you will be even more relaxed on the green. Loosening those muscles really is the magic bullet in golf when it comes to putting!

The Game Of Golf With The Right Clubs

Generally, a set of clubs off the shelf isn’t likely to be a perfect fit for you. Manufacturers create clubs for folks of average build – whatever that is! Not only is everyone different in their physical make-up, but no two players swing exactly the same. So one golf club size definitely does not fit all.

If your clubs are too long or too short, you're likely to have problems. To find the right size clubs for you, try swinging with a few different lengths. Basically, you choose clubs that are about as long as the distance from your navel to the floor. You don't need to decide right away—lots of courses and driving ranges have sample clubs that you can practice with until you find the perfect fit!

You can rent different kinds of equipment, too. Before you invest in a set of expensive clubs, try a variety of types at your local golf course. Test the waters for a few months. See what feels best for your game.

Now, if after you’ve tried out several brands of clubs, and you’re getting serious about the game, it’s a good idea to get custom fitted by a PGA professional at a golf range. Don’t do this until you’re able to consistently repeat a swing. Bottom line – if you can’t hit worth a nickel, you don’t need to be fitted for clubs yet!

A golf pro can help you find which clubs are best for you. As previously stated, everyone has a different physique. Some clubs just aren’t going to feel right to you. This is no reflection on your game and certainly no reason to quit playing. By getting custom fitted for your clubs, you will likely hit the ball more consistently and accurately.

First, the fitter will have you hit a few balls. This is no time to try to impress. Just hit normally, and try to loosen up. Your swing speed will be recorded to determine the right flex of shaft.
Fitters will take into account the length of the club so that it’s comfortable for you. They’ll look at your hands to determine if you need special grip fitting. You may need longer or shorter clubs.

The angle of the club may be adjusted for you as well. When you’re done with the “fitting”, specific recommendations will be made regarding Length of clubs, Size and design of clubhead, Lie angles, Shaft types, Grip types and Set make-up.

Then you can make a wise decision on exactly what clubs to purchase. You will likely see an improvement in your game overall when you have the right equipment, tailor-fitted for you.

You and your Caddie

Author: Dave Owen

In golf, once you leave the clubhouse, you are alone. Well, that is not entirely true. You have your caddie to help you. Here are some of the things caddie can do to help your game.

A caddie will help you carry your golf clubs. This is probably the most common job a caddie is presumed to perform. This is not an easy task because a golf bag is heavy. Try to be patient with him and trust him to take care of your clubs.

A caddie can also wash your clubs. This is an important task because wet clubs could affect your game tremendously. This should be part of his job and should be done for you after every shot.

A caddie will also keep the ball clean if you want it. He might ask you from time to time if you want it cleaned. He should also carrie a number of spare balls in case you want a new one or if goes into the rough or the water.

A caddie will replace your divots before moving onto the next hole. He does this to help maintain the course and also for other golfers who will behind you on the course.

A caddie will also do smooth ball marks on the green. He does removes the mark by using a flat surface like his shoes. He does this to maintain the greens and help you with your shot. Once you’re lining up for a shot and see a mark that he failed to see, just point it out to him and he will repair it. Remember that is easier to make a good shot when the green is straight and smooth.

A caddie could also help you with your game. An experienced caddie probably has some experiences watching good players make their shots or how they putt their greens. He may also have more experience than you on this course. If he is observant he could be a valuable source of tips that could help you improve your game.

Having a caddie with you can be great for your game. He will help you get more relaxed and remove your concern about the simple things. Remember, though, do not take it out on your caddie if your game is not going good. Caddying is a tough job and it’s not really his fault if you are making mistakes in your game.

Golf Bag Buying Tips

Author: Dave Owen

A golf bag is an essential equipment that is used to carry all your golf stuff. This will include your golf balls, golf clubs, markers, tees and even umbrellas and towels.

Golf bags don't have any effect on the result of the game. But, they can greatly affect your attitude by way of offering comfort as you makes your way around the course.

As to how much load in your gear you put in the bag is up to you. You also have the choice of how it will be moved around the course. Either by your hand, by a caddie or on a cart.

If you plan on riding in a golf cart on your rounds, then the weight is not a factor. But if you plan on carrying it yourself, then a lighter bag is a 'no brainer'.

Types of golf bags:

1. Staff bags. These are the largest types of golf bags. They can hold a complete set of golf clubs and have many side pockets. These are the other golf items and equipment that you may wishe to take along.

Almost all professional golfers prefer the staff bag because they can hold a lot of equipment. And since their caddy carries their bag, weight is never a problem.

A good staff bag is one made of leather or materials that are of high quality and are more expensive.

2. Cart Bags. A lot smaller in size compared to staff bags. But they are more bulky and may be hard to carry around the course. These bags are designed to be used on golf carts but have fewer pockets and storage capacity.

3. Carry Bags. The smallest type, and are normally made from plastic, nylon and other light materials. These bags are constructed to hold the essentials such as the golf clubs, a few small golf accessories and balls. They are the right choice for the golfer who favors to carry his own bag.

Choosing the right bag for you

1. When deciding on which bag to buy, take into account the price and your budget. How much you can afford will determine what type and quality bag is right for you. But, as I have said, the more expensive it is, the more complex the features of the bag. Keep in mind however, that the bag will not directly effect your game. Golf shoes, clubs and balls, on the other hand, will have a more significant impact than the bag.

2. Features. You should be aware of what features you need in your bag and what equipment it will need to contain. A bag that can stand alone will make it easier to take out your golf clubs during your game. You may also need to carry an umbrella. If this is the case, you would need an umbrella slot. However, if you only take the basic gear, you may want consider a simple and light bag that can accommodate just the basics.

How to Improve Your Golf Game: 3 Tips

Author: Dee Power

Golfers are bombarded with advertisements for the latest fabulous, amazing high-tech golf equipment, clubs with the magic power of wizard's wands and golf balls that soar far out into the heavens, or behave as they are being operated by remote control.

Every golfer dreams of improving their golf game, so most of us are conditioned to believe we need the latest and greatest equipment to achieve our goals.

Shop Online for Discount Golf Equipment

There's no doubt that having good equipment should be part of a golfer's strategy to improving their game. And fortunately, because of tremendous discounts on equipment offered at shopping sites all over the Internet, the best clubs are not out of reach for even the most budget conscious golfer.

Shopping for equipment online may take getting used to, but the savings are well worth it. Step one in your game improvement strategy is to give yourself the competitive advantage of having the best equipment available.

Practice will improve your golf game.

There are two other often overlooked ways of improving your enjoyment of the game of golf: playing more and practicing more. Only a small fraction of golfers ever take lessons, and that's a shame, because a trained golf teacher can quickly spot flaws in your swing that you are totally unaware of. Why not take some of the savings on equipment you earned from shopping online, and putting those dollars toward a series of lessons? (Most professional teachers offer discounts if you sign up for a block or series of lessons, rather than booking them one-at-a-time).

Play more and improve your golf game.

And then, get out there and play more. Increasing your frequency of play is the best way to truly get a feel for the game of golf, so the club always feels comfortable in your hand, rather than like some foreign object you have just become acquainted with. But you say, greens fees are too expensive these days, and your golf budget is maxed out? There are solutions for this problem as well on the Internet. You can get coupons for discounts on greens fees of up to 50%, purchase passes for discounted play, or even get free rounds of golf. Besides saving tons of money, you might find great courses to check out that you have never heard of before.

Try these three strategies together: Get the best equipment at discounted prices, spend more time practicing and learning the game, and get out there and play more frequently. You'll be surprised how many strokes you can shave off your average score.

Phoenix Golf Courses Part 1

By Jonathan Blocker

Golfing in the Phoenix sunshine makes it a suitable year-round activity for the whole family. You can book Phoenix city golf tee times easily online. You will also see offers for discount Phoenix golf, so that it will be easy for you to enjoy your favorite game often. The game of golf comes with its own jargon, and understanding a bit of that lexicon can make the game much easier to understand.

There are many specific terms for the wide variety of poor shots, for example. A chili dip happens when a golfer chips too short. A wormburner or groundhog killer is a shot when the ball is hit low across the ground, which can cause it to bounce quickly along the surface. If you want to break the rules you might do a foot wedge, when you kick your ball into a better spot. You'll get quite embarrassed if you miss the ball entirely after you swing at it. This event can be called a whiff shot.

If you are new to the game of golf, you might hear more experienced and even professional players using some different terms. A bandit is a player who has a high handicap but plays better than you would expect. After a stroke is taken toward the green, you might hear a golfer say bit, or take a seat, meaning that they want the ball to stop or slow.

Not surprisingly, a putting green can also be called the dance floor, and the rough can go by the names of jungle, brillo, or bundi. If a golfer makes a shot where the ball speeds past the hole instead of going in, they call that a taxi.

You can try out all of these useful and colorful words on any of the glorious golf courses that Phoenix has to offer. If you want a challenging day out on the course, head over to Superstition Springs Golf Club. Golfweek Magazine has named it to a list of America's Best Golf Courses, and it offers a number of unique hazards, including water features, large bunkers, and a great deal of rolling ground, adding to both the fun and beauty of this lovely golf course. On the other hand, if Arnold Palmer is one of your golfing heroes, you will not want to miss an opportunity to play at the course that the great man himself designed, the Legend at Arrowhead. Interesting topography is featured at the Glen Lakes Golf Course. It includes pine and palm trees, with the addition of three pristine lakes, that come into play as you travel about this fabulous nine-hole executive course. All of these golf courses and more await you in Phoenix.

Later European inhabitants would build upon the canal system implemented by the Hohokam, and bring even more water to the area, which aided in the cotton and citrus farming that was popular at the time. The city of Phoenix was incorporated in 1881, and became the state capital of Arizona in 1912.

History of Golf

By Jonathan Blocker

There are many types of enjoyable exercise, but one that comes to the top of the list is the game of golf. There are golf courses in nearly every community in the United States and beyond, and all offer tee times that are available when you make golf course reservations. How golf got its start is a fascinating topic that all golfers want to know more about, and the game has a history rich in culture and lore.

There is much lively discussion over the origins of the game of golf. Many different cultures have laid claims to being the first one to have invented the game. For instance, an eleventh century Chinese book talks about a game that sounds like golf. In the Netherlands' city of Loenen aan de Vecht the game was said to be mentioned as having been played in 1297. Some scholars believe that the Vikings invented the game of golf in the middle of the thirteenth century. Scotland has long been believed to be the location where golfing was invented as well. Golf was played at the famous Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, and this led to a law being put in place by King James the Second in 1457. The king's soldiers were spending too much time playing the game and not practicing their archery, so he outlawed the game at St. Andrews. Early accounts of the game are also seen in depictions inside England's Gloucester Cathedral dating back to 1340.

The word "golf" is based on the Dutch word "kolf," which refers to a "bat, club or stick," and thus may lend credence to the idea that golf began in the Netherlands. Apparently there was a game where you place an object in a hole in the ice, and this was called "ice kolf," which might be seen as how the land-based form of the game started. More recently, a German scholar has found early depictions of the game of "Kolven," which was a game about putting a ball into a hole, and this supposedly helps to set the sport's origins in the Netherlands.

A couple of the oldest golf courses are St. Andrews and the Old Links at Musselburgh, both in Scotland. It is believed that Mary, Queen of Scots, played golf at Musselburgh in 1567. The Old Links had only seven holes originally, but eventually it grew to nine. St. Andrews started out with eleven holes that were played twice, for a total of twenty-two. In time, some of the links were shortened and combined, so that it played out at eighteen holes.

This ancient game can still be enjoyed worldwide today, and its history simply adds to its popularity.

10 Quick Tips To Improve Your Golf Game

By Marc Spencer

Golf is a sport that attracts such a wide audience. Unlike other sports, golf is a game that one can participate in regardless of age or limits due to physical condition. As a fellow golf professional I instruct golfers of all ages and abilities. In my experience there are many common mistakes that most golfers make. Here is a list of 10 tips that will help improve your game.

1. Grip Pressure. Grip pressure and arm tension is something that all golfers fight. On a scale of 1 to 10, feel like you’re holding the club at a level 3. Golf is hard enough to play relaxed; tighten up and you won’t have a chance.

2. Set Up. So many times students say there is a problem in their swing. 90% of the time the problem is in their set-up. This usually results in poor posture. Make sure that your back is straight to allow for proper trunk rotation.

3. Alignment. Alignment is so important. Make sure that the line of your feet is parallel to your target line. Then make sure your knees, hips and shoulders are parallel to your feet.

4. Tempo and Balance. Tempo and balance go together like peanut butter and jelly. When you have the proper tempo, you create good balance. If you can finish a swing on balance, you have a much higher chance of getting a good result than if you are falling off balance during the swing.

5. Take One Extra Club. Leave your ego at home. Take an extra club and swing it 80%. Your balance will get better and you will start hitting more solid shots.

6. Loosen Up Before The Round. Loosening up allows you to relax and get some of the bad shots out. It also allows you to get familiar with the speed of the greens. Most importantly, it loosens up your body to prevent muscular injury.

7. Make An Aggressive Swing At A Conservative Target. Follow this advice, it really works.

8. Swing The Club; Don’t Hit The Ball. Amateur golfers hit the ball. Swing the club through the ball to a picturesque finish.

9. Don’t Keep Your Head Down. Where is your head when you finish your golf swing? Keep your head up through the swing and let your body turn through to the target.

10. Spend 70% Of Your Practice Within 50 Yards Of The Pin. This is not the fun part of the game to practice but this is the fastest way to cut strokes off your game.

If you have any further questions, consult your local PGA Professional.

Marc Spencer is a PGA Golf Professional at The Atkinson Resort & Country Club. During his ten years as a golf professional, Marc has instructed over 8,000 lessons and more than 350 clinics. His playing accomplishments include top-10 finishes in the 2001 and 2002 Massachusetts Open Championship, and a 4th-place finish in the 1997 New England Open. Golf clubs and something you have to know about costs

By Ken Wilson

There is a saying that golf is a sport for the wealthy man. Of course, there are occasionally sales that can ease the process of buying golf clubs, occasions such as discount golf opportunities. If now you are one passionate golfer, it means that when you have first heard about golf, you have said to yourself that you had to try this game.

Most likely, you have started asking questions about what you need and what it takes to be a good golfer. Of course, you may have come across a whole bunch of explanations and recommendations as to the importance of the swing and the importance of your golf equipment.

What is every golfer’s first lesson? Well, it most likely targets golf clubs. Therefore, the very fist lesson is not only about places where you can play golf, but also about the tools used to strike the golf ball. There are three categories of clubs: wood, iron, and putter. To what concerns wood, originally, with woodenheads, they were useful for propelling the ball for long distances. Now they have titanium or composite alloy heads.

In respect to iron, you can have clubs with metallic heads, also with varying degrees of loft. Putters are useful for propelling the ball with the highest precision to small distances. Golf clubs wear a label, by a number; the lower numbers describe progressively longer shaft lengths and lower clubface lofts.

A set of golf clubs can differ from one golfer to another, but the right number of clubs in a set is 14: three woods, two wedges (irons with a loft of more than 44 degrees), a putter and eight iron (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 plus a pitching wedge (a loft of 44-50 degrees)). Nevertheless, to become a golfer you will need more than a pair of clubs. You will need also clothes, shoes, a bunch of accessories and complete equipment that usually overpasses $600.

So you should be prepared to take a lot of money from your pocket in order to play this sport. On the other hand, you can look for discount golf, an opportunity to have all you need for the game at affordable prices or another solution you can take golf equipment by leasing. Another solution not so advisable is to rent complete golf equipment. However, this may be in the end almost as expensive as having your own equipment.

The cheapest solution is to purchase discount golf equipment from the Internet or from the specialized stores. Do not be afraid that it may the case of some used items. Frequently, the products come from the last year inventory, overstocks or from clearance merchandise. Therefore, they are new and most important they are cheap. So take our advice and buy your clubs in discount golf terms either from our online shop.

Nevertheless, whether you can afford a complete set of golf items or you purchase the equipment at a discount, do not forget that this is only the first step. You have to take lessons to learn the technique and of course, you have to make a season ticket to a golf course to practice this sport.

In addition, remember that not the club is important but the swing. After you have purchased your cheap, yet reliable golf equipment, you will need patience and practice to learn how to handle that perfect swing. In the end, do not forget that you are playing golf because you like this sport. So take the best advantage out of your passion and turn it into an affordable one as well.

Discount golf providers are your opportunity to buy cheap golf clubs. Playing golf can be expensive, but taking advantage of the discounts on the market, you will turn it into an affordable game.

The Best Golf Fitness Exercise to Improve the Power in Your Golf Swing

The game of professional golf has transformed over the years. Many spectators, journalists, and pros themselves state that golf is now a game of power. Driving distance is integral to winning on Tour, club manufacturers gear much of their advertising around the â€Å“power game”, and it is a wish of most every amateur.

Improved distance off the tee or with any club on the course requires increased clubhead speed. Clubhead speed is a product of power in your golf swing. Increasing the power in your golf swing will improve your clubhead speed. Equaling more distance on every shot you desire.

The question to ask is how do you increase the power in your golf swing?

Three components exist directly affecting the power in your golf swing:
1) Efficiency of Your Golf Swing Mechanics
2) Power Generating Capacities of Your Body
3) Equipment

Review of the list indicates three integral components exist that directly affecting your clubhead speed. First and foremost are your golf swing mechanics. Golf swing mechanics can either be efficient or inefficient.

Efficient golf swing mechanics allow for you to input the greatest amount of power developed within your golf swing into the club and golf ball.

Inefficient golf swing mechanics result in the exact opposite. Inefficient swing mechanics create what is described as "energy leaks" within your golf swing. "Energy leaks" cause less power to be translated to the club and golf ball. This is because large amounts of energy are lost during the mechanics of the swing.

Again, to improve your clubhead speed and the power outputs within your golf swing. It is necessary to develop efficient golf swing mechanics.

Secondly, equipment does play a role in your clubhead speed. The technological advances in both club and golf balls have an effect. The key to increasing your power outputs in relation to equipment is to get the correct club and ball for your swing.

Matching up your swing and swing speed with the correct equipment will allow you to get the most clubhead speed out of your swing. For example, if your average swing speed is 95 and you are using extra stiff shafts. This could easily result in a loss of clubhead speed in your swing.

It is strongly recommended you get fitted for your equipment. Getting fitted matches up the correct equipment with your swing. Allowing you to get the most "bang for your buck" in terms of your golf swing.

Finally, we come to the topic of this article and that is your body. Your body has a direct affect on clubhead speed. It is your body swinging the club, and generating power within the mechanics of the golf swing.

That being said, developing power within your golf swing is directly related to the ability of your body to generate power. Often times this is the forgotten component by many amateurs in relation to developing power.

In order to increase the power outputs in your golf swing it is necessary to implement golf fitness exercises into your training program.

Golf fitness exercises increase the ability of your body to generate power within the golf swing. Resulting in increased clubhead speed.

What is the best golf fitness exercise to increase power in your golf swing?

Before answering that question we must look at the mechanics of the golf swing. The golf swing is both a linear and rotational movement.

Composed of finite biomechanical movements performed in a specific order. In addition to performing the biomechanics of the golf swing in a specific order, timing each movement is also required.

In order to perform the mechanics of the golf swing correctly it is necessary for the body to have certain levels of flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and power built within the body.

If one does not have these physical parameters developed within the body to a certain level. The ability to perform the mechanics of the golf swing efficiently, and generate power will be compromised.

The answer to the question of the best exercise for improving the power in your golf swing is not one specific exercise.

Improving power in your golf swing requires a "basket or exercises" including flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and power training.

A combination of flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and power exercises are the key to enhancing the power in your golf game.

To summarize, improving the power in your golf swing consist of;
1) Efficient golf swing mechanics,
2) Proper equipment,
3) Golf fitness training.

The combination of these three components result in increased clubhead speed in your golf swing.

Not one single golf fitness exercise can improve the power outputs in your golf swing. It is rather a combination of flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and power training exercises that enhance clubhead speed.

Implement a comprehensive a golf fitness program into your schedule will undoubtedly increase your clubhead speed, driving distance, and overall performance on and off the course.

The Best Way to Eliminate Lower Back Injuries in Golf

One out of every two golfers will incur a lower back injury during their playing careers, are you one of them?

Almost every golfer on the planet has at some time or another felt their lower back "tighten" up on the course, after a round, or even getting out of bed. Why is this so? The reason for the high number of lower back injuries in the sport of golf is a result of the golf swing itself!

The golf swing is a rotational movement. It requires you to rotate around a fixed spine. The lower back takes the brunt of the pressure of the twisting and turning.

The rotation and torque can make your lower back very easily fatigued or injured. The question to ask is how to counteract the stresses placed on the lower back?

There are a number of ways to help you "dodge the injury bullet" when it comes to the lower back.

Lower back injuries generally occur because of three different reasons.
1. Poor Swing Mechanics
2. Weak Lower Back Muscles
3. Workloads

The first category has to do with your swing mechanics.

A research study (don't quote me on the exact %) indicated that the rate of lower back injuries in the amateur golfer was 60% higher than professionals in the sport. The study determined the number was statically higher in amateurs because of the shear forces created in the golf swing.

The amount of shear forces created in the amateur's golf swing was exponentially higher than the professional. Professionals have a much more efficient golf swing, lowering the shear forces placed upon the lower back compared to the typical amateur.

The second category refers to the physical aspect of the golf swing.

The lower back is used extensively in order to swing the golf club properly. If the lower back is weak, over time it will become fatigued. Once the muscles of the lower back become fatigued, the ability to swing the club with the same force becomes much more difficult. Additionally, once the lower back is tired, and you continue to perform the movements of the golf swing. The lower back will become sore and eventually you will injure it.

The final reason golfers tend to have many lower back injuries is workloads.

Simply put, workloads are the number of swings you take within a certaintime frame. For example, a PGA Tour player during a competitive week on Tour may swing a club well over 1,000 times. This is the total number of swings over a 7 day period can be defined as the Tour players workloads for that week.

A lower back injury can incur if the workloads for any golfer become too high. Regardless of the efficiency within the golf swing mechanics or the strength of the lower back, too high of a workload will lead to injury. For example, in you were to go to the range and execute 1,000 swings of the golf club in a 3-hour time frame. The likelihood of a lower back injury is very high. Why? Because the workloads are too high within the give time fame for any golfer!

The key in regards to workloads is to match up the efficiency of your golf swing and the strength within the lower back. If you have poor golf swing mechanics and a weak lower back, your workloads should be very low. If you have moderately efficient golf swing mechanics and a fairly strong lower back. The workloads can be higher.

What is the best way to avoid a lower back injury?

Simple, it is a 3-step process.

Number one; develop efficient golf swing mechanics. This can be done through proper instruction, practice, and time.

Number two; implement a golf fitness program into your exercise routine. This type of program will strengthen your lower back in relation to the golf swing.

Number three; monitor the number of swings you make with the club in relation to points one and two.

Deciding On A Golf Degree, Surprising Advantages

Author: Andy West

Although you can get lessons at your local golf club, there are many reasons why you might want to pursue a golf degree at a professional golf academy. Even if you have no intention on going pro, you may be surprised at the advantages that such a program may confer.

The first advantage that a golf degree offers is time. Everyone today is concerned about making the best use of his or her time, and a serious approach to your golf game can offer you just that. Consider that when you go to your golf club you are there primarily for fun. You may sign up for lessons or instruction as well, but these lessons are not intensive and they only take place sporadically. In contrast, a golf academy places you in an intensive study environment. In just one week of instruction in this environment you can learn what it would take you months or even years to learn through the occasional lesson at your club. You can still have a fun time as you learn, but with an instructor helping you every step of the way, you improve rapidly and dramatically.

Of course, when you pursue a golf degree, you also save time and money at your local golf course. Since one week at a professional academy hones your game dramatically, you save money you would spend on occasional lessons at your course or club. One week in a professional learning environment can cost far less than years of occasional lessons and the results are much better. Once you have been studying golf seriously by pursuing a golf degree, you also reap the rewards on the green, not only in your enjoyment and proficiency at the game, but also in terms of time. With your golf game mastered, you can spend more time playing and less time fretting over decisions or missed chances on the course. You will be able to move through the course not only more confidently, but also at a better pace.

You certainly don't need to have aspirations of a professional career in the sport in order to benefit from a golf degree. Of course, if you do want a career in the sport, then professional instruction is a must. However, even if you only play from time to time, there are many benefits to getting serious about learning golf. One reason for professional instruction is that only professional help will get you past a certain stage in your game. Practice will help you improve your game, but only a professional can help you once you reach a certain level. If you have been improving steadily and have suddenly reached a stage where your game is not improving much, you have just unknowingly reached a danger zone.

When you hit a roadblock in improving your game, you may suddenly get frustrated and may be tempted to quit golfing entirely. In many cases, the problem is simple and can be quickly resolved with the help of professional instruction. You may have a few bad habits, for example, that make your drives inconsistent. If you simply stop playing or enjoying the game, you will have wasted all the time you invested in golfing to get to this stage. All the money you have spent on fees and equipment will be wasted, and, of course, you will lose the fresh air, exercise, and camaraderie you enjoy on the course. Rather than give up the game entirely or let a minor snag ruin your fun, professional instruction is the ideal answer. A professional instructor can breathe life into your game, help you over the hump and can help you infuse your game with a new sense of enjoyment.

Golf Swing Technique - Tips To Improve Your Swing

Author: Dean Caporella

Exercise is a fundamental part of golf swing technique yet many golfers tend to overlook it.

This is more the case with part time golfers but for those players looking to get an edge on their competition, whether it be playing once a week or on a more regular basis, exercise should be a vital component of your game.

It just makes sense. A strong fit body is going to make more of an impression on a long distance drive than a body out of shape. On the other hand, getting fit for golf is different than preparing for a running marathon.

Golf Swing Technique - Total Body Involvement

Next time you shape up to drive, take note of the parts of your body being used to execute the shot. You'll be surprised. From the neck to the torso all the way through the legs and to the feet.

So getting fit for golf means exactly that. You need to work the muscle areas which play an important part in your overall swing. Each of these areas should be worked individually.

Golf Swing Technique - Using weights

Light weights are effective in strengthening muscles around the neck and shoulders. Light dumbbell weights are great to work the arms while squatting-style exercises are effective on the legs.

If you are a regular golfer, then walking won't be a problem especially if you are on the course several times a week. But for those of you who get out on a course infrequently, walking just 3-4 times a week is a great exercise, not just for the legs but for promoting overall health.

While going to the extent of using light weights might sound a little over the top for occasional golfers it would still be foolhardy to ignore exercise as a part of golf swing technique.

Golf Swing Technique _ Injury Toll

Occasional golfers still need to loosen up and some simple stretching exercises should suffice. The general rule of thumb is to warm up for at least 15 minutes before you play your first shot. Areas under threat from injury from lack of warm up exercise include the back, shoulders and neck.

The interesting aspect of golf injuries is on many occasions, you won't see a player go down in a "screaming heap" such as you would on a football field but golf injuries tend to develop over time. In other words, golf injuries act a little like stealth and when they arrive, they can be quite serious, especially back-related injuries.

Include exercise as part of your golf swing technique starting today.

How To Choose A Golf Fitness Trainer

I can't begin to tell you how many times I've been asked this question during my travels around the country and world on the golf circuit; "Sean, I am looking for a golf fitness trainer in my area, what do you suggest?"

Finding a golf fitness trainer for you, simply takes a little knowledge and time on your part.

Bottom line there are thousands of fitness experts, personal trainer, instructors, and conditioning coaches available to you. Some are more qualified than others to help you improve your golf game. Lets first off take a look at some general qualifications to look for in candidates.

The golf trainer's education would be the first thing I would consider. In the world of personal training and fitness, there are no educational requirements, governing bodies, or state boards. Essentially, anyone can hang a sign on their front door and call themselves a "personal golf fitness trainer". It's unfortunate, but unqualified people are training people every day.

A highly qualified golf fitness trainer will likely have a college degree in the field of kinesiology, biomechanics, health sciences or a related field. There are many other organizations that accredit trainers too. These organizations provide intense educational programs providing the trainer with certifications. Accreditations from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, National Academy of Sports Medicine, and American Council of Exercise are highly regarded within the field. I would suggest looking for a golf fitness trainer with a degree in the field and at least one additional certification from the above organizations. This tells us that they have taken the time to become more specialized and better educated.

The Proof is in the Pudding

Experience within the field is absolutely critical. First look at the trainer's general experience and dig deeper. In general, I am talking about how long they have been in the industry. Are they just starting out or are they a seasoned veteran in the field? What areas of the industry have they worked? Have they worked only in the health club setting, have they worked in a collegiate or professional athletic environment, or experience directly related to the golf industry?

I would look for a golf fitness trainer with some experience in athletics. A trainer with experience in competitive athletics understands the demands on your body under competition, whether it's the weekend round with your friends, the club tournament, or the Masters for that matter.

Go to the Right Mechanic to Get Your Car Fixed

Now I don't know about you, but if I had an engine problem with my car, I probably wouldn't go to a motorcycle mechanic to get it fixed.

Would you look for a personal trainer that specialized in let's say, youth football, to help your golf game?

Most trainers in the industry usually have a repeat client base. The client base can tell you a lot about the trainer's area of expertise. The trainer's cliental base could be very specific, for example working with elderly individuals or with athletes only. Other trainers may work with numerous types of individuals from young children, homemakers, to the budding collegiate star. More than anything a trainer's client base gives you an idea if they have experience working with someone like you, and if they fit your individual needs.

I would suggest looking for a golf fitness trainer that has some experience working with someone like you. For example, if you are Nationwide Tour player, I would probably suggest looking for a golf fitness trainer who has experience working with professional athletes. The experience of working with professional athletes is only going to help with the interaction between the two of you.

Can't We Just Get Along

Outside of education and experience, the final area to consider is the trainer's personality. Some personalities will work well with you and others will not.

To get the best results for you, you must find a trainer that you are comfortable with on a professional and personal level. This will allow for the training sessions, development of your program, and the relationship to be a positive experience for both. Remember, you must trust the golf fitness trainer and this requires a level of comfort with them.

Overall, I suggest taking some time on the front end and interviewing a series of trainers. This will allow you to compare and contrast all of the criteria we've discussed, and help you make a decision you feel good about.

Remember, choosing the right golf fitness trainer for you can mean the difference between reaching your goals on the golf course or not.

Golf on a Budget and Why

Author: James Murray

You are probably thinking, golf on a budget! Can there be such a thing? Well, it is possible, if you take a balanced, objective look at the strategies used in marketing golf products.

Case in point, local golf shop owners today receive new golf balls from representatives of different companies for them to use, hoping that they will recommend them to their customers.

Usually, these owners try just about everything, and in their opinion, they all play about the same now. Picking up a box of 12 Titleist balls are probably the best around. They cost $24.99 for the dozen. Then pick up another box and say, “But this one is our best seller.”

The box would be priced at $44.99 for the dozen. A marketer would say, “It’s all hype. People think that if the balls cost double, they are bound to play better.”

Now, there are new hybrid ironwoods that are really going to change your golf game. Or is it all a part of the marketing pitch?

A marketer would say that since the golf market was so saturated, he priced his clubs at three times the price of anyone else’s. And he sold hundreds of thousands of dollars worth. The clubs were not any more expensive to make than other clubs. It was just a “market test”. And that is way golfers would buy like crazy.

Since no two people play golf the same, and everyone has an individual physique and swing, a product that adds distance for one player may not help another player at all.

Think about something you do very well that requires a piece of equipment. You are the expert in this area. Should everyone who attempts your job then buy the exact same equipment as you have? Will that mean they will be able to do the job better or as well as you?

Food for thought, right? An example would be if you enjoy gardening, and have a flower garden. You would probably only have one or two garden tools that are considered the best.

So just because one golf pro buys one kind of ball or club does not mean that it is the best for you.

The sales pitch that swear you are going to add 30 yards and never hit another slice entices golfers to shell out the big bucks. But if you are careful and have a healthy dose of skepticism, you will save both time and money in the long run.

Remember, in the golf world, just because a product is more expensive, does not mean it is necessarily any better.
